Recently I came across a television broadcast in which a young man from another country was being interviewed on a news program. He looked into the camera and asked the question that became the title of this series: “America, what happened to you?” He was, of course, referring to the rotting abyss into which this once great nation has descended. The man’s very accurate assessment of America’s fall caused me to reflect on the recent past.
Being both a student and a professor of what is called the “human condition,” and being also a student of the Holy Scriptures, I knew that what is taking place in this so-called “civilized society” was inevitable. But what shocked me was the speed with which America has fallen over the past few years. I, along with others more knowledgeable than I, have traced the nation’s speedy descent into moral decay to the beginning of the Clinton administration.
When local, state or national elections take place the voters put forth the people they believe that will best represent their values, beliefs and views. Though the nation had been in a state of steady moral decline since early in the 1900’s, the descent had been somewhat gradual. That ended in the 1960’s with what has come to be known as “the sexual revolution.” Bill Clinton wallowed in that moral sewer like few others. The voters, both state and national, were aware of his character problems. Still, they elected him to the nation’s highest office–twice. That alone reveals the moral decay that had overtaken the nation by that time. But that was merely the beginning of America’s moral decline. More liberal elections have brought about more and faster moral decline on both the local and national level as anyone who watches Fox News knows. Truth has gone to the legacy news outlets to die. They refuse to air what is actually happening on the streets of the nation’s liberal run cities and along her southern border.  As did the man on t.v., common sense Americans are wondering “What happened” to this once great nation. The extreme irony of this situation is that this “Christian nation,” this “One Nation Under God,”–the God she supposedly “Trusts,” was alerted thousands of years ago when the Lord warned her Israelite ancestors about His cause and effect method of rulership. That method is simple: obey His Word and be blessed; disobey His Word and be cursed. We will examine Deuteronomy 28 where we find His method in easy-to-understand language.
In the first 14 verses of the chapter we find the Lord telling us what He will do FOR individuals and nations that obey His Holy Scriptures. One will notice that obedience GUARANTEES blessings from on high. Beginning with verse 15 He warns us about what He will do TO the disobedient, about the curses He will place on people and nations that refuse to obey His Words. We will not examine every verse in the chapter. Instead, I will put forth those verses that directly apply to America today. Let us examine this gut-wrenching journey of truth which is being played out today by what was once a great light to the rest of the world–the Lord’s end-time “light to the world.”  That light has gone out, prompting the world to ask through one stranger: “America, what happened to you?” Let’s find out.  L.J.
