What Is A True Christian? (Pt. 1)

In the 18th chapter of the Book of Acts we find the story of a man named Apollos who was extremely zealous for the Lord. He was an excellent speaker and well versed in the Scriptures. He was bold and fearless when preaching to the Jews. However, Apollos did not have the understanding he needed in order to not only preach God’s Truth, but live it as well. Though he was zealous for the Lord, in many cases he was zealously wrong. As the Lord would have it, a well-grounded couple in the Church of God named Aquila and Priscilla heard him preach and took him aside to give him the instruction he was lacking. The episode is recorded in Acts 18:26: “… whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them and expounded unto him THE (only) way of God more PERFECTLY.” Is there only one way to serve God? Does He command that we serve Him perfectly? Did He mean it when He said that, of the billions who have called themselves His people, only a FEW will join Him in His kingdom? And if He meant it–which He did–what is it that separates those few from the billions who claim to be one with Him? These are life and death questions that will be answered either now or later. For the true Christian there is only one source of Truth relative to those questions–God’s Holy Bible–the ONLY source of Truth concerning the Godhead and Their rules governing the Christian walk.

Today, approximately 2.2 billion of the world’s population of about 7 billion inhabitants call themselves Christians. And each, with rare exception, owns or has access to a Bible. The Christian Bible is the most purchased and most stolen book ever printed. The cross is the most identifiable symbol known to man. The Sunday Sabbath, Christmas and Easter are recognized as Christian observances throughout the world. The fact that the cross, the Sunday Sabbath, Christmas and Easter are condemned by God in His Holy Bible does not negate the fact that they are associated with Christendom throughout the whole of mankind. In summary: CHRISTIANITY IS KNOWN OR KNOWN ABOUT THROUGHOUT THE INHABITED WORLD.

As described in the Bible, a real Christian is one who lives according to a prescribed way of life–God’s way. The key is to determine what (single) way is His way? Exactly how is a true Christian required to live? God arranged to be recorded in His Bible that to live HIS WAY is to live according to a certain standard. That standard is His Holy Bible which “holy men of old spake as they were moved upon by the Holy Spirit.” Either they or their scribes then wrote what they had spoken. Is it not incredible that the Bible, which was written on degradable materials, survived in some cases over 6000 years so that it could be made available to us today through mass printing techniques? This proves that God’s way was the only way true Christians lived then and the only way they live now. So then how does a Christian live?

The word “Christian” is derived from the word “Christ” and refers to one who is a follower (disciple/student) of Jesus of Nazareth. A somewhat condensed version of the Christian walk is found in Matthew 5,6 and 7 in what has come be known as The Sermon on the Mount. This message was meant to be a private teaching session for the disciples. However, the large group who had been following Jesus were crowded in around them so that they heard what He was saying. The Sermon on the Mount identifies several of the characteristics those who follow Christ in Truth will manifest. As we enter into this teaching the reader will find that what Jesus told the disciples, the multitude and us amounts to a LAW and many types of WORKS–two of the most rejected and reviled words in the entire Bible. However, one will note in studying the Bible that he must follow God’s stone-etched Law and do numerous works in order to enter His kingdom upon the return of Jesus Christ at the end of the age.
