Trinitarians point to the fact that the Holy Spirit is referred to as “he” in John Chapters 14-16, thereby “proving” that the Spirit is a member of a tree-member Godhead. There is an explanation for this. Like a number of other languages, both Greek and Hebrew are “gender designated,” meaning that those lang- uages assign a gender (male, female or neuter) to every noun (person, place or thing). The Greek word for “comforter” (the Holy Spirit) in John’s gospel is translated “parakletos,” which carries a masculine or neuter designation. For this reason the translators used the pronoun “he” in those instances. However, in Acts 2:2,3 the Holy Spirit is referred to as “it” (neuter), then in 5:32 as “whom” (neuter). The Bible writers felt free to refer to the Holy Spirit/parakletos as either male or neuter. Therefore, being called “he” does not make the Spirit a God.
As is the case with many “Christian” beliefs and customs, the trinity doctrine was unheard of in the early church. It was not until after the Catholic rebellion that the Trinitarian doctrine was introduced in the fourth century. The doctrine of three gods in one was popular among the ancient Syrians, Babylonians, Egyptians and Irish Druids. The trinity was one of many beliefs that the apostate church accepted from the masses of heathen who “converted” to escape the sword of the Roman Empire. The heathen trinity from whence Catholicism took the concept had one body with three heads. The church changed it to three separate bodies representing Joseph, Mary and Jesus. She later changed it to Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Various Scriptures in both testaments reveal that there is no trinity in the Godhead: Job 27:3– “The Spirit of God is in my nostrils.” Neither member of the Godhead is in anyone’s nostrils, but rather are in heaven as numerous Scriptures reveal. Ezekiel 11:24–“The SPIRIT of God took me up and BROUGHT ME ….” Ezekiel 37:1–The HAND of the Lord CARRIED ME ….” Was God’s hand another God called his Spirit? Scripturally, both “Spirit” and “hand” are symbols of God’s power, not God Himself. Ezekiel 36:27–“I will put My Spirit WITHIN you and CAUSE you to walk in My statutes … and KEEP My statutes to do them.” As noted previously, nowhere does the Holy Spirit call God “my God” nor Jesus “my Christ.” Yet both God and Christ call the Spirit “My Spirit” on several occasions. The Holy Spirit is given by the Godhead to empower man to obey. The Spirit serves as the power of divine execution; it does not operate in the arena of decision-making. Ezekiel 37:5–“The Lord said, ‘I WILL BLOW on these bones; I WILL BREATHE into you …'” In vss 9-14 Ezekiel was told to prophesy and call “the Breath” to enter the dry bones. Speaking to the bones, God said, “I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT in you and you shall live. I have spoken it and I have performed it (12,13). Notice that HIS BREATH AND HIS SPIRIT ARE ONE IN THE SAME. It was God (“I”) who sent, blew, spoke, caused and brought the Spirit to bear on the situation. God sent His “breath” (Spirit) “… from the four winds” (9). His Spirit is everywhere. It fills heaven and earth (Jer. 23:23,24). Jonah tried to flee from “… the presence of the Lord” (1:3). The two members of the Godhead were not in the fish’s body, but on their respective thrones. Neither Jonah nor David could escape the Spirit of the Lord. The Lord was in the fish’s body in the form of His Spirit in the same way that He was in Job’s nostrils in the form of His breath.
Genesis 2:23,24 we find this statement: “And Adam said ….” Then in Matthew 19:4,5 we find those same words: “He Who made them (Adam and Eve) said ….” Both God and Adam are credited with making the same statement. Who made the statement? Both of them. God spoke the words to Adam through His Spirit and Adam voiced them audibly, which is the exact meaning of “inspired by God” and “God breathed.” In Matthew 16:13-17 we find Jesus telling Peter that his words had not come from the apostle himself, but rather from the Father in Heaven. Peter had simply spoken what God had spoken to him through His Spirit. This process is plainly revealed in Second Timothy 3:15,16, Matthew 10:19,20, John 6:63;12:49 and Second Peter 1:21.
We are commanded on several occasions to love, obey, serve, magnify and glorify both the Father and the Son, but never the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:23 and Ephesians 1:15-23 tell us that God raised Jesus from the dead. Romans 8:11 tells us that God gives life to the dead “… THROUGH His Spirit.” First Thessalonians 1:10 tells us that God raised His SON Jesus from the dead. Therefore, the One Who raised Jesus had to be His FATHER. Who was the Father of Jesus Christ, God or the Holy Spirit? Paul said that God raised Jesus from the dead; he also said that the Holy Spirit raised Him from the dead. Both statements are correct. God the Father raised His Son from the dead (1 Thes. 1:10) using His power–the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is God’s power, not the Father of Jesus Christ. The Bible is referred to as the Word of God, the Word of Christ and the Word of the Lord, never the Word of the Holy Spirit. God did not send forth the Son of the Holy Spirit; He sent forth His Son in the power of the Holy Spirit.
In First John 3:24 and John 14:23 we are told that the Godhead lives in the saint. First John 4:13 tells us that the saint dwells in the Godhead. Both are correct in the sense that the Holy Spirit indwells the saint, thereby enabling the saint to have within him the essence of both Father and Son in the form of the Holy Spirit. In that sense the saint lives in the Godhead. I do not pretend to fully understand exactly how this process takes place. I only know that it does because God said so. God’s ways are above our ways; in many cases we will not understand until later. For now we must simply believe because “IT IS WRITTEN.”
In Hebrews 1:3 we are told that Jesus is the brightness of HIS (God’s) glory and the image of HIS person, and that He upholds all things by the Word of His power. We are then told that, His task com- pleted, He sat down at the right hand of the MAJESTY on high. Note that the writer did not say “THEIR” glories, images and majesties. If the Holy Spirit is equal to God the Father, the writer would have used the plural form when referring to the two Deities Whom Jesus was glorifying.
In Matthew 10:20 Jesus told the apostles that when they ministered it would not be they themselves who would speak, but that the Spirit OF their Father would speak IN (through) them. In Luke 2:26 we are told that God reveals information to men “… BY (using) the Holy Spirit.
In James 1:1 the apostle called himself the servant of God and of Christ. Why not the Holy Spirit? “Thou spake TO the people BY the Holy Spirit IN (through) the prophets” (Neh. 9:30). Luke 10:22: No man knows who the Son is but the Father, and who the Father is but the Son. Would not the other God know who both of Them are? In Mark 13:32 Jesus said that neither Himself, the angels nor any man knew when He would return. Why did He leave out the Holy Spirit? In John 5:21;8:16 Jesus said that He and the Father had the right and the power to judge and receive honor. Not the Holy Spirit? John 15:23,24–The world hates Christ and the Father. Not the Holy Spirit? Numbers 23:5–“And the Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth,” which he then spoke. He also put words in the mouth of Balaam’s ass, which the animal then spoke.
The Lord uses His Spirit as a voice, an act, unseen power, etc. as shown in Scripture.
Luke 6:19–“… virtue came out of Him and healed them all.” Mark 5:30–Jesus knew immediately that ‘virtue had gone out of Him.’ “Virtue” (Gr.-dunamis–force, power, strength) went out of Jesus and pro- duced healings. At times the Spirit/dunamis goes forth in the form of words: “He cast out the spirits with His Word” (Mat. 8:16). “His Word was with power” (Lk. 4:32). In Luke 7:7 we find a man who showed that he understood the relationship between Christ’s Word and his power when he said, “Just speak the Word and my son will be healed.” Psalms 107:20–“He sent His Word and healed them.” Luke 5:17–“… and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.” Though the Lord was not there, His Spirit/power/virtue was. Though Jesus would not be with His apostles then, nor with those who would serve Him in the future, He provided them and us with His power: “Ye shall receive power (dunamis) after that the Holy Ghost comes upon you” (Acts 1:8). “He that believes on Me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works than these shall he do ….” (Jn. 14:12). How? By the Holy Spirit that empowered Him to do what He did. Where would this power come from? They (and we) would be “… embued with power from on high” which Jesus promised in Acts 1:8.
Perhaps the premier passage of Scripture showing that the Holy Spirit is the tool used by the Godhead is Revelation 1:1,10,11;3:20-22. In 1:1,10,11 we are told that Jesus Christ is speaking to the churches. In 3:20-22 we find Jesus making certain that we understand Who is speaking: “I STAND,” ‘MY VOICE,” “I WILL COME,” “I WILL GRANT,” “I OVERCAME,” “MY THRONE,” “MY FATHER.” Then He said, “… hear what the SPIRIT says to the churches. Clearly, Jesus was speaking to the churches by way of His Holy Spirit.
Why is it important that we understand the Truth about the Holy Spirit? Because Truth matters. So much so that God said that we would know the Truth and be set free from error. The Counterfeit Church rejects God’s Truth and embraces Satan’s errors. Come out and join the Lord in His tiny, insignificant, despised and hated church. Then He will be your God and you will be his child (2 Cor. 6:17).
