Biblically, the words “one” / “in” / “one with” in terms of human-human or God-human relations does not mean one in the numerical sense. This Biblical Truth contradicts the belief of trinitarians who contend that the Godhead consists of three “persons” in one entity called “God.” The ancient hymn that speaks of “God in three persons, (the) blessed Trinity” simply sets the global church’s trinity error to music. The trinitarians’ three-in-one doctrine is preached and taught repeatedly within the Institutional Church. Anyone, including myself, who believes that there are two deities in the Godhead–God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son–are considered heretics. But the question arises: “What about the statement made by Jesus Himself Who said: “I and My Father are one” (Jn. 10:30). Let us always study the Scriptures for knowledge and understanding, not for confirmation of a pre-formed idea. Let us study according to the rule given to us in Isaiah 28:9,10: “Whom will He (God) teach knowledge? And whom will He cause to understand His message? Those who have been weaned from the milk and drawn from the breast–mature believers. For (to receive understanding and knowledge) precept must be (studied) upon (added to) precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little (information), there a little.” In verse 13 He repeats the rule, showing us that His way is the only way we can learn His Truth. Following His rule, let us look at one such precept/line.
A Scriptural passage that explains how two or more entities become “one” is 1 Corinthians 6:17: “He who is joined to (“in” / “one with”) the Lord is “ONE SPIRIT WITH HIM.” Recall that Jesus prayed that the disciples would be “one” as He and the Father were “one.” Obviously, the 12 disciples were not one numerically. Neither were God and Christ. Neither were God, Christ and the Holy Spirit, neither were the Godhead and a man. Recall that God said that when a man and a woman have sexual intercourse they become “one.” When a man cuts his finger, does his sex partner feel the pain? The John 17:11,21,22 passage we dealt with in the previous posting involved the personal spirits of God, Christ and their disciples (then and now). When those personages are said to be “one,” “in” and “one with” each other it means that they are of “one spirit”–one will, one character, one desire, one agenda, etc. “Can two walk together unless they agree?” (Amos 3:3). To walk with God one must “agree” with Him by “walk(ing) as He (Jesus) walked” relative to His relationship with His Father. Statements dealing with one entity being “in’ or “one with” another entity refers to their having the same mind-set, agenda, will, character, etc. as they work toward a common end. Two (or more) cannot walk together unless they agree as to where they are going and how they will get there.
Another passage put forth by trinitarians as “proof” of a three-in-one godhead is John 14:8-10. Here we find Philip saying to Jesus: “Lord, show us the Father.” The Lord’s response has for hundreds of years been offered as confirmation that there is a divine trinity. Jesus tells Philip and the other disciples that because they had “known” Him they had (also) “known” the Father BECAUSE He (Jesus) was “in” the Father and the Father was “in” Him. Jesus further explained that BECAUSE the disciples had “seen” Him they had also”seen” the Father. Jesus was referring to “seeing” things spiritually. Do you “see” what He meant?
In verse 10 Jesus explained that the Father was “in” Him in the form of the Holy Spirit, and that it was the Spirit who supplied Him with everything He needed to do what He did and speak what He spoke (Jn. 47-50). The disciples had “seen” the Father as they heard Him speak and watched Him heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out devils, multiply food, etc. He wanted them (and us) to understand that HE WAS A MAN LIKE ALL OTHER MEN AND WAS THEREFORE TOTALLY DEPENDANT UPON GOD FOR EVERYTHING HE DID AND SPOKE. GOD’S HOLY SPIRIT IN HIM SUPPLIED WHAT HE NEEDED. Nothing has changed. God’s men today depend totally on Him for their spiritual power. L.J.
