“The Spirit That Is In Man”

January 2, 2026 by Larry Jaques Leave a Comment

When God created man He made him totally different from the animals He created. This difference was not only on the physical level, but also on the mental and spiritual levels. And for evolutionists out there, notice that He made no mention of the animals evolving into human beings. On the spiritual level, animals have no spirit. On the mental level, man was given a spirit which Job called “the spirit that is in man,” also known as “the mind,” which animals do not possesses. All animate species God created have brains. Non-human creatures’ brains equip them with INSTINCT. Man’s brain has an added quality known as INTELLECT which is why God gave man dominion over all other creations (Gen. 1:26). All species have brains, but only human beings have minds, which constitutes the main difference between the human species and the various other species (animals, fowl, reptile, fish, etc.).

The output of the human brain is much greater than that of any other species. Something within man gives him the ability to reason, to make decisions and judgments. Animals can do these things but only on the most primitive, instinctive level. What is that something that man alone possesses? The Prophet Job calls it “the spirit in man” (33:4). In several other places it is called “man’s spirit.” The Apostle Paul states that “The (Holy) Spirit bears witness with OUR SPIRIT that we are the children of God” (Rom. 8:16). Notice that Paul mentions two different spirits in that statement: God’s Spirit and man’s spirit–the spirit that is in man. Note also that the Holy Spirit and man’s spirit are totally different; unfortunately they are at odds with each other except within a few people–God’s Very Elect saints. Romans 8:14 tells us that (only) those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons (children) of God–true Christians. The Holy Spirit leads those in whom it abides. Through man’s spirit God’s Spirit leads man to know, believe and obey the Words found in God’s Law–the Bible/Gospel. The Ten Commandments constitute a condensed version of His Law. This is the Law/Gospel Jesus said He did not come to destroy, but to fulfill. Read The Trinity. Key word–Trinity.

The human spirit imparts to man the gift of intellect. “But there is a spirit in man and the inspiration (Spirit) of the Almighty gives him understanding” (through man’s spirit) (Job 32:8). Man’s spirit also gives him the capacity for godly reasoning. It is by man’s spirit that man communicates with God and God with him. If man will receive the Holy Spirit, the Lord, through His Spirit, will communicate His mind (will), which is what the Bible is–His will in written form, just as Jesus was the will of God in human form. This is brought out by Jesus as recorded in John 12:44-48. Read that passage carefully for within therein Jesus said: “He who sees Me sees the Father.” This means that when people hear (or read) Him (His Words) they hear the Father. God’s Word is His will, therefore, he who reads the Bible reads the will of God. Through the Holy Spirit abiding in God’s saints, people can see God when they see the saint.

In several places we are told that the Lord “abides” (lives/”walks”) in His true saints in the form of His Holy Spirit. Man has a will and can do whatever he wills to do. It is when man follows his own will that he brings trouble into his life. Without the Holy Spirit, man does what he wills to do. He is not aware that he is in reality obeying Satan who controls the will of all who are not God’s true children who are led by His Spirit. In Revelation 12:9 we are told that “Satan has deceived the whole world.” People who do not have the Holy Spirit within them do not know that it is the devil (God’s enemy) who directs their will. The entire world is being led by Satan, including the church world. Jesus stated this Truth in Matthew 7:13,14 and 22:14. Many are called to obey Him, He said, but few answer His call. Billions have believed Satan’s lies and have embraced one of his religions, one of which is called “the church.” Read “My People Called By My Name” and Who Are God’s People? Key words–Called and People respectively. Man is a spiritual being. Both God and Satan call to human beings to join them. God calls man to obey His will; Satan calls man to obey his own will. Satan wins 99% of souls by giving man what he wants–self will. Read Matthew 16:23. Notice that Satan gives man “the things of man” (what man wants)–the godship of self.

Man is born with a spirit that gives him an advantage over every other earthly creature. But even then, man is incomplete. It is only through the Holy Spirit leading him from within that the fullness of spiritual Truth can be learned, believed and obeyed, which is God’s will for mankind. In First Corinthians 2:9-13 Paul tells us what God wants His most prized creation (man) to have: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart (mind) of man the things God has prepared for those who love Him.” The Almighty had taken the Apostle Paul into the third heaven and revealed to him His will for mankind. Paul continues: “But God has revealed them to us (His true saints) THROUGH HIS SPIRIT. For the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God …. These things we (apostles) speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches, but Words which the Holy Spirit teaches ….”

Only those who have God’s Holy Spirit within them can receive such information from the Lord. Such a one receives Words from God through his (man’s) Spirit. On several occasions while teaching God’s Word, statements have come out of my mouth that I did not know before that instant. God speaks to me at the most unusual times. I often receive messages from Him when I am doing normal human things and am not thinking about Godly things.

God gives us a spirit that enables us to think on the God level as He speaks to us through our spirit. In this way we are able to “have the mind of Christ” (1 Cor. 2:16/ Phil. 2:5). Read those verses. God gave us our own Spirit that helps us to fulfill His purpose for our being here. Through our spirit we can, under the leadership of His Holy Spirit, build His character within ourselves. His Spirit combines with our spirit to bring us into a family relationship with Him and Jesus. Read The True Trinity. Key Word–True. The human spirit makes it possible for man to achieve the incredible human potential which God wants us to fulfill in this life so that we can join Him and Jesus in the next life.

I differ with every preacher on earth today in that I believe that God requires and equips us to actually do what He commands of us as stated in First John 2:6, Revelation 3:21 and First Corinthians 2:16. I believe that God offers us the opportunity to truly “walk as Jesus walked” and to “Overcome even as He overcame (temptation)” in this life. I also believe that He meant it when He said that we can, now, in this life “HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST.” How else can we walk as He walked and overcome Satan as He did while on earth? Man tells me that this is impossible. God tells me that He commands it. I will go with God. If I am alone, so be it. God is with me and in me through His Holy Spirit. What more do I need? L.J.
