One of the foundational principles of professing Christendom states that God’s Law–the Ten Commandments spoken audibly from atop of Mt. Sinai and written in stone by the Almighty Himself–was nailed to the cross when Jesus died on it. This theological “truth” which “everyone” knows is Biblical is so deeply rooted in the Catholic/Protestant mind that billions of people have, are and will continue to bet their eternal lives on its verity. I personally heard a Baptist pastor state that, because the Law was no longer in effect, if a Christian wants to kill someone he can, and God will not punish him for it. A woman I knew said: “God doesn’t like sin, but He won’t do anything about it.” I heard a local minister warn his local and t.v. congregation that if they tried to refrain from sinning, “… you’ll just make yourself sick.” God’s Law, we are continuously assured, belongs in the dustbin of history and has no place in the church of this enlightened age.
Satan and his parishioners invariably quote one specific passage of Scripture that “proves” that the Law was “nailed to the cross,” that refraining from sin is impossible, and that Jesus died so that they can sin and not be held accountable. The Scripture is Colossians 2:14 which talks about the death of the Messiah at which time He: “Blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was contrary to us, taking it out of the way by NAILING IT TO HIS CROSS.”
Billions of cross-wearing, Bible-toting, Scripture-quoting, perfect attendance award winners have been deceived by history’s most successful deceiver. How? By doing what he does so well–using God’s Words by twisting them into meaning what the people want them to mean. This is referred to as “ear-scratching.” He pulls off this soul-killing ruse by keeping his followers from knowing God’s Truth because it repeatedly refutes what they believe. The Apostle Paul tried to counteract the devil’s work by preaching “all of the counsel of God” (Acts 20:27). Satan is able to cancel out the effect of Paul’s preaching by not allowing church people to understand the Lord’s most prolific apostle whose messages are hard to understand because of his manner of writing. The Apostle Peter, when referring to this truth, stated in 2 Peter 3:16: “In all of his (Paul’s) epistles he writes in ways that are HARD TO UNDERSTAND so that those who are UNLEARNED AND UNSTABLE TWIST what he, along with other apostles, say … to their own DESTRUCTION.” Note that Peter was writing to people in God’s churches–people who had copies of the epistles of the apostles. The problem arose, and continues to arise, when people refuse to study past the headlines. They did (do) not realize that God is in the fine print which people refuse to study for fear of being proved wrong by the details He has provided. Pride is a deadly evil spirit that hides inside of men. Pride, I must remind one and all, comes before destruction and a haughty spirit before the fall (Prov. 16:18). God tells us that He used Moses because he was the most humble man on earth.
Let us return to the beginning of Christ’s ministry where He makes perfectly clear the status and importance of His Father’s Law: “Do not think that I came to DESTROY THE LAW or (the writings of) the prophets. I did NOT come to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it. Verily I say into you, until heaven and earth have passed away, not one jot or tittle will be removed from the Law until all of it has been fulfilled” (Mat. 5:17,18). Satan has used the final Word in this passage to refute the 53 Words Jesus spoke leading up to it. The wily devil uses the Word “fulfil” to “prove” that, contrary to Christ’s plainly spoken Words to the contrary, the Law was destroyed on the cross. Consensus within professing Christendom holds that anyone who does not believe this “Bible truth” is not a true Christian. Let us examine the Word “fulfil” as it is used by God in the Holy Scriptures. LET US KNOW GOD’S TRUTH CONCERNING THIS LIFE OR DEATH PRINCIPLE BY CONSULTING HIS HOLY SCRIPTURES. The church rejects this method of discerning God’s Truth. However, I am not part of that “unclean thing” (2 Cor. 6:14-20) so I am free to go with the Lord. I trust that you will go with me.
In the Greek language, the language spoken and written by Jesus and the apostles, the word “fulfil” is “pleroo,” which means to make full, to complete. Jesus said He came to earth to completely fill up the hearts of Truth-seeking men with His Father’s Law. He came to teach men how to complete the process of becoming holy by obeying that Law. In Isaiah 42:41 it is written that the One (Jesus) who would come to earth would “magnify the Law and make it honorable.” The Word, Who became Jesus of Nazareth, knew that by the time He came to earth men would have minimized the importance of the Law and would thereby have dishonored it. He would come to magnify the Law–to make it large in the lives of God-seeking men. By obeying the Law and teaching men to obey it He would return it to its place of honor among them. The Law would “fill” their hearts because He would have written it therein by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us look at some of the other references to the Word “fulfil” in order to determine the context in which it is used by the apostles in their writings and teachings. The church claims that the word “fulfil” means to bring something to an end so that it no longer exists. Let God address this Satanic “truth.”
In Matthew 3:15 we find Jesus telling John the Baptist that it was God’s will to FULFIL all righteousness. In Philippians 2:2 Paul tells the church to FULFIL his joy by obeying God. In Colossians 1:25 Paul tells the people to FULFIL the will of God. In 2 Thessalonians 1:11 Paul tells the people to FULFIL the good pleasure of God’s goodness. In Mark 14:49 Jesus said that the Scriptures must be FULFILLED. In John 17:13 Jesus asked people to fulfil His joy. In Romans 8:4 Paul wanted the righteousness of the Law FULFILLED in the people. In Romans 13:8 Paul states that love FULFILLS the Law. Be reminded that “All Scripture is written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit” (2 Tim. 3:14-16)–the same Holy Spirit one must obey in order to be a son of God (Rom. 8:14). It stands to reason that the HOLY Spirit would lead men to do that which is HOLY. The Law defines sin: “To transgress (break) the Law is sin, for sin is the transgression of the Law” (1 Jn. 3:4).
With that Truth in mind, let us ask the following questions: does God want us to bring righteousness to an end? to bring His will to an end? to bring His joy to an end? to bring His good pleasure to an end? to bring His Scriptures to an end? to bring love to an end? to bring the righteousness of the Law to an end? DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT LEAD US TO SIN? Is it any wonder why God rejects the Institutional Church outright and calls her beliefs and teachings “doctrines of devils?” (1 Tim. 4:1). L.J.
