Jeremiah’s Burning Scroll: A Message For The Ages (Pt. 2)

April 21, 2022 by Larry Jaques Leave a Comment

In Jeremiah 36:4 we find the prophet, following the Lord’s command, telling his scribe, Baruch, to record “all the words of the Lord which He has spoken to him” (Jeremiah).  He was to write them on a scroll.  We are not told at this point what Baruch was to write, but we know that the message contained “the anger and fury that the Lord has pronounced against the people of Judah” (vs 7).

Baruch delivered the scroll to “all the people that came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem …. who gathered in the house of the Lord ….” (vs 10).  Over time Baruch read the contents of the scroll to a number of people, including the princes of the people.  The princes told Baruch and Jeremiah to hide, for they were required to tell the king what Jeremiah had spoken.  Knowing that the words Jeremiah had spoken and Baruch had recorded were from God seemed to have no effect on them.  The men then delivered the scroll to the king. Having had part of the scroll read to him, the king took the scroll, cut it in half and threw it into the fire.  “Yet they were not afraid, nor did they rent their garments” (vs 24).  Burning an object revealed ultimate disdain for that object.  It was clear that neither the king nor any of his servants feared the Lord.  Because the people followed the leading of the king, it is clear that the general population also lacked fear of God.

The king commanded that Jeremiah and Baruch be brought to him.  However, the Lord hid them from their pursuers.  Beginning with verse 28 we find the Lord telling Jeremiah to take another scroll and have Baruch write on it a repeat of the first scroll, namely that “the king of Babylon would destroy the land of Judah and would kill both its people and its cattle.”  After the king had read the scroll, Jeremiah was to then speak to him.  He would tell him that because he had burned the first scroll and had shown no fear of God, the king of Babylon would indeed destroy the land of Judah and kill both people and cattle.  Jeremiah did as he was commanded.  God then told him what He (God) would do to the king because he had burned the Words of the Lord.  The king would have no descendant to sit on the throne.  The king would be killed and his body would be left outside to rot in the elements.  God would punish all of the people of Judah because they had followed the king in rejecting Him and his ministers who had told them what He required of them (to obey His Law) and what would happen if they refused to meet His requirements.  Let us now turn to chapter 37.

Over time a new king–Zedekiah–came to reign over Judah.  But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land listened to the words of the Lord as relayed by Jeremiah His prophet.  In the meantime the Babylonians had besieged the city of Jerusalem.  Some time later the Egyptian army arrived to help the people of Jerusalem, prompting the Babylonians to leave.  Finding himself in a very bad situation, King Zedekiah sent messengers to Jeremiah, asking him to pray for the city of Jerusalem.  Throughout this time Jeremiah had been given the freedom to move about as he pleased.

Then came the word of the Lord to Jeremiah: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel (specifically the people of Judah), thus will you say to the king of Judah who had sent men to inquire of Me, ‘Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has come to help you, will return to Egypt.  And the Chaldeans (Babylonians) will come again to fight against this city.  They will capture it and burn it with fire.  Thus says the Lord, do not deceive yourselves into believing that the Chaldeans will depart from the city  (permanently), for they will not depart”–they would return.

Notice that Jeremiah had not granted the king’s request that he pray for the city. In order to show the Israelites (Judahites–Jews) know how far they had turned from God and how deep was His wrath, He had Jeremiah to tell Zedekiah and the people that even if He helped them to defeat the Chaldeans and kill all of them except a few wounded soldiers, those wounded soldiers would rise up and defeat the people of Judah and burn the city of Jerusalem.  God was furious at the people of Judah, especially the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for disobeying Him.  He wanted them to know that it was He–God–who would bring about the demise of His chosen people.  Why?  REBELLION AGAINST HIM.  God knew that victory over the Babylonians would not be followed by repentance and conversion from the people.  There is a point of no return when the only way to get through to them is defeat, disaster, etc.  Recall that the Apostle Paul threatened to turn a man over to Satan for the destruction of his body if he did not repent and return to the Lord in total obedience (1 Cor. 5:5).  Bear this in mind as you watch professing Christendom degenerate at an exponential rate, growing further and further away from God with the passage of time.  God commands that we “come out of her and be separate, touch not that unclean thing.”  Then and only then will He be one’s God and one will be His child” (2 Cor. 6:14-7:1).

Jeremiah’s warnings to the Israelite people concerning military defeat, death and enslavement serves as a warning to the people of the world’s so-called “Christian nations” today.  Just as their ancient ancestors–the 12 tribes of Israel–had been destroyed because they had not feared God and had not obeyed His Law, the nations of modern Israel–mainly the United States, Britain and the Jews of the Middle East–will be defeated militarily and will suffer total destruction.  The few who survive will be taken to foreign countries as slaves.  This warning applies to all of the world’s self-labeled “Christians.”

Recall that in 1 Corinthians 10:11 the Apostle Paul stated that what God did to ancient Israel was recorded and preserved for “our instruction (teaching) upon whom the ends of the world have come.”  He was referring to the people living during the last days of the age–today.  The word “our” refers specifically to those who profess the Biblical God. Look around you.  Do you detect any fear of God in those who call themselves His people?  Do they believe and obey God’s Word?  Professing Christendom has left the Lord in favor of religious beliefs and practices that take them out from under His Lordship.  In the eyes of the Almighty they have “burned His Word” and will suffer the prophesied fate.

GOD IS ANGRY WITH CATHOLICS, PROTESTANTS AND THE JEWS–ALL WHO CALL THEMSELVES HIS PEOPLE BUT REFUSE TO OBEY HIS WORD.  HE WILL DESTROY THEM AND THE NATIONS IN WHICH THEY LIVE AS HE DID THEIR ANCESTORS–THE 12 TRIBES OF ISRAEL.  HE WILL CAUSE THEM TO BE DEFEATED, DESTROYED AND ENSLAVED.  ONLY HIS VERY ELECT–WHO FEAR AND OBEY HIM–WILL BE PROTECTED FROM THE RAVAGES OF THE COMING GREAT TRIBULATION AND DAY OF THE LORD.

God is filled with wrath toward counterfeit Christians and their counterfeit churches which destroy the lives of billions of salvation seekers by proclaiming a perverted gospel.  He makes it clear what kind of people He is looking for in Isaiah 66:2: “… to this man I will look (with favor), to him who is of an humble spirit, who TREMBLES (IN FEAR) AT MY WORD.”  The false (Catholic/Protestant) church does not fear God.  Therefore, He will destroy all cross-wearing, Bible-carrying, Scripture-quoting, sermon-preaching “Sinners Saved By Grace” because they refuse to fear Him, tremble at His Word, believe it and obey it.  See the Introduction to this website for some of the beliefs and practices of those who will suffer the consequences of their rebellion against the Lord and His Word.

Church people blame Satan for what is happening in the world.  Let it be known: IT IS THE BIBLICAL GOD WHO IS BRINGING HELL UPON THE EARTH BECAUSE THE PEOPLE DO NOT FEAR HIM.  HE WILL ESPECIALLY PUNISH THOSE WHO PROFESS HIM BUT REFUSE TO FEAR, BELIEVE AND OBEY HIM.  FOR PROOF, READ LEVITICUS 26 AND DEUTERONOMY 28.   And remember, what is written by holy men of old (1 Pet. 1:21) was written as a warning for those who call themselves God’s people today (1 Cor. 10:11).  L.J.
