The only Words written by either member of the Godhead–God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ–were finger-etched in stone and called the Ten Commandments. Everything else recorded in the Holy Scriptures was handwritten by human beings writing under the power and direction of the Holy Spirit of the Godhead. The Scriptures themselves prove that the Holy Spirit is a singular spirit which They Co-own and Co-use to do what They deem needs to be done. As we are told in Luke 1:35, the Holy Spirit is the power of the Godhead. They use Their Spirit either independently or jointly. See The Trinity. In the Luke 1:35 case, the One Who would come to be called “the Father” used the Spirit to impregnate the virgin Mary. I do not pretend to understand all of the miraculous machinations involved in that endeavor. But I know that it is true because I know that the Bible is true, so true, in fact that Jesus Himself called it “Truth” (Jn. 17:17). His description is good enough for me. When I stand before Him I will be able to say to Him what He will already know–I believed His Word and lived accordingly. With that in mind, let us enter into one of the most beautiful and informative messages God was kind enough to place in the collection of letters we know today as the Holy Bible. Man has labeled the letter we will be studying The Book of Hebrews. Though the author of the letter is not given, it is believed by most Bible scholars that the Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Israelites in the New Covenant Church. Having a history with the Lord, they were in a position to be leaders in the church. Paul brings this out in Romans 3:1,2 where he states that the Jews had an advantage over the Gentiles in that they had always had “the oracles of God”–the Old Testament. This advantage applied to their Israelite counterparts. The “Jews” were and are comprised of three of the tribes of Israel–Judah, Benjamin and Levi. We must understand that all Jews are Israelites, but not all Israelites are Jews in the same way that all Texans are Americans but not all Americans are Texans.
It is also necessary to understand that though each letter was written to a specific church body for a specific reason, each of the letters eventually made its way to the churches scattered throughout the Roman Empire at that time and throughout the world today. I find it nothing short of miraculous that copies of those hand-written letters remain available to this day. That alone should tell us how important their messages are to the miracle-working Lord of the Universe. I have been asked why some letters were included in the Bible and others were not. I do not know, nor do I need to know. I need to know only that those that the Lord chose to include comprise the Truth that I must know, believe and obey in order to spend eternity with Him. I also know that He has chosen me, appointed me and anointed me to preach, teach and minister those letters to anyone having eyes to see and ears to hear His Truth. I continually praise Him for choosing this most unworthy of men to complete this most glorious of tasks. Admittedly, I often question His choice. Knowing what I know about me, I would have chosen someone else, and have told Him so. But He has made His choice. Now it is time to get on with what He has chosen, appointed and anointed me to do according to Matthew 24:14 and 14:12. In those passages Jesus Christ promised me that He would not only send me into all nations (via the internet), but would empower me to do everything He has done and even greater things. THIS IS CHRIST’S UNBREAKABLE WORD. I expect Him to fulfill it. With that in mind, let us examine His message to the Israelite Christians of that day and to the entire church today.
Verses one through three: In verse one we are told that God spoke to the “fathers” of old. Normally we associate “the fathers” with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But there were others, such as Noah–“a preacher of righteousness” who preached God’s Truth to the world’s inhabitants. The point being made here is that God spoke to men of old. In most cases He did so through His Holy Spirit. Having heard the loud, clear spiritual voice of God on several occasions, I can assure you that such communication from on high is real, and in every instance, true. In some cases He (the Word Who became Jesus of Nazareth) appeared to men of old. Regardless of how He communicated with His holy servants, they “spoke as they were moved upon by the Holy Spirit” (2 Pet. 1:21) and recorded in writing what God had spoken to them through His Spirit. Their writings, along with the writings of the apostles, are collectively called the Holy Bible. That God today uses both Old Testament and New Testament writings (Scriptures) to teach His people is brought out in two clearly stated passages of Scripture. In First Corinthians 10:11 we are told that the Old Testament prophets recorded God’s dealings with them “for our (the New Testament Church’s) instruction.” Then in Ephesians 2:20 we are told that the New Testament Church is built upon
“(the teachings of) the prophets and the apostles.” The vast majority within professing Christendom dismiss the Old Testament as a relic of the past. This is a deadly error. See White Fields. L.J.
