Only God can determine spiritual Truth and error, right and wrong, good and bad, righteousness and evil. Those who embrace this Scriptural Truth believe Deuteronomy 13:3,4 where we are told that we must not only love the Truth Decider with our total being, but must PROVE OUR LOVE FOR HIM. Which raises the question: How does one prove his love for God? He tells us: “YOU MUST WALK AFTER THE LORD YOUR GOD, FEAR HIM, KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS, OBEY HIS VOICE (WORD/TRUTH), SERVE HIM AND CLING TO HIM.”
There are two reasons why church people reject this passage of Scripture: 1) it is unnecessary and, 2) it is found in the Old Testament which was supposedly “nailed to the cross.” In order to expose this deadly error we must understand that the New Testament apostles taught out of the Old Testament exclusively as numerous Scriptures prove. The New Testament did not come into existence until 11 of them had been martyred (90-100 A.D.). The apostles repeatedly warned the church that there would rise up in their midst men who would lead them astray with spiritual-sounding statements. In 2 Timothy 3:13 Paul warns us to watch out for those who would utter such statements of “wisdom,” calling them “evil men and seducers” who would grow progressively evil due to their having been deceived (by Satan). These men would in turn deceive the people. This perfectly describes the spiritual condition of modern day Christendom. Now let us return to Deuteronomy 13 in order to identify the “gods” and “lords” the false prophet would lead men to serve. Recall that God said that HE would send miracle workers to test those who claim to belong to Him. He would do this to distinguish between His sheep and Satan’s goats, His wheat and Satan’s tares, His contenders and Satan’s pretenders, etc.
Let us return to a Biblical fact: ONLY GOD CAN DETERMINE SPIRITUAL TRUTH. In the introduction to this website I listed numerous religious “truths” that the church has concocted to replace God’s Biblical Truths. One will notice that each of them does away with a Biblical principle. Only a superior god can overrule an inferior god. In replacing the Biblical God’s doctrines with doctrines of their own, churchmen have declared themselves to be superior to the Biblical God. By overruling the Bible’s Author, churchman has replaced the true God with himself. THIS IS IDOLATRY, which is condemned by the first commandment in God’s Law which, we are told, was nailed to Jesus’ cross. In the denomination in which I grew up one of the main themes was “… the priesthood of the believer.” After comparing church doctrine to Biblical Truth I have concluded that “… the godhood of the believer” would be more appropriate.
Just as the Lord warned, there are “gods many and lords many” within professing Christendom who “call good evil and evil good.” The modern church has gone the way of the self-serving, self-worshiping, self-sufficient world. Today, the only difference between the church world and the social world is where some people spend a couple of hours on Sunday morning. A comic strip from the distant past featured a character called Pogo who once declared: “We have met the enemy, and he is us.” That truth is being played out on the world scene continuously. Unlike their unchurched spiritual brethren, church people are not only their own enemies, they are also God’s enemies (Jam. 4:4). L.J.
