In Psalm 139:1,7-11 we find King David marveling at the omnipresence of His God (the Word Who became Jesus of Nazareth): “O Lord …, where shall I go from YOUR SPIRIT? or where shall I flee from YOUR PRESENCE? If I ascend up to heaven, YOU are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, YOU are there. If I take wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there shall YOUR hand lead me, and YOUR right hand shall hold me.” Note that the LORD (“YOU”) and His SPIRIT are ONE in the sense that the Holy Spirit is the power and presence of God. This would later be brought out when Gabriel spoke to Mary about her miraculous pregnancy. When she asked how such a thing was possible, Gabriel answered: “The HOLY SPIRIT shall come upon you, and the POWER OF THE HIGHEST shall overshadow you. Therefore that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God” (Lk. 1:35). The Holy Spirit and the power of the Godhead are synonymous. Jesus told the disciples that, following His ascension they would “… receive POWER (from God) after the HOLY SPIRIT comes upon you ….” (Acts 1:8). King David correctly stated that HIS GOD (THE WORD–JESUS) WAS EVERYWHERE AT ALL TIMES BY WAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. In the spiritual realm, what was true then is true now–Jesus does not change; He is the same yesterday, today and forever. See The Trinity.
The Scriptures are rife with instances in which the members of the Godhead did what They did through the power of their Spirit. An example of how this takes place is found in Genesis 1:3: “He (God) said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.'” The Word received orders from the Almighty God, then spoke what He had been ordered to do. The Holy Spirit did what He spoke, thereby bringing everything that exists into existence. In John 1:1-4 we find these Words: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was (also a) God, the same (Word) was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him (the Word), and without Him was not anything made that was made. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” God decreed creation; the Word spoke; the Holy Spirit brought it into existence.
In Matthew 8 we find that a Centurion has approached Jesus and asked Him to heal his servant. Jesus replied that He would go to the man’s house and heal the servant. The centurion replied that that would not be necessary, that Jesus needed to “speak the word only and my servant will be healed.” The Roman soldier understood the power of the spoken word–that it carried the spirit (power) of the Provider of the ultimate power. Jesus marveled at his faith. Note the many instances in both Old and New Testaments that God’s men spoke things into existence. A perfect example is found in the episode in which Jesus cursed a fig tree, causing it to die immediately. His Word, which carried God’s Spirit, turned life into death. And let us not forget: “Lazarus, come forth,” and “In the name of Jesus Christ, rise and walk.”
For God’s faithful, obedient saints, their words, which carry His power, have the same effect as if Jesus was speaking them. If one has enough faith, his words do not need to be verbally spoken. In one case I cast the demon of drunkenness out of a man by thinking the words. We were sitting in a crowded restaurant where I was trying to speak to a drunk. God had set up the meeting so I knew I was to tell the man God’s Truth. The man was so drunk I could not communicate with him. I silently addressed the demon, saying: “In the name of Jesus, come out of him.” The shocked man was instantly sober. In another case I prayed over a piece of paper and told a woman to lay the paper on her infant child while it slept. The child had been sick for several days and had kept everyone awake day and night. The woman and her husband were awakened the next morning by the baby who had been totally healed during the night.
