The Book Of Acts (Ch.’s 22-28)

In chapter 22 the Apostle Paul, finding himself in trouble once again, asks to speak to the Jewish mob who want him put to death for preaching about Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God. After gaining permission to speak, he tells them the story of his conversion.

Chapter 23 begins with an episode that, due to a lack of understanding, has resulted in a church-wide error being put forth as “Bible truth.” Here we find Paul standing before the Sanhedrin where he has said something the man in charge does not like. The man motions for him to be smitten on the mouth. Paul calls him a whited wall and warns him that God would smite him. When told that this was the high priest he was talking to, Paul apologized, noting that had he known to whom he was speaking he would not have berated him. To back up his apology he quoted Exodus 22:28: “You must not speak evil of THE RULER OF YOUR PEOPLE.” Note in both Exodus and Acts the “ruler of your people” refers to the Israelites’ SPIRITUAL LEADER, not their political leader as we have been told.

In chapter 24 we find Paul making a statement that destroys one of the most sanctified beliefs found in professing Christendom–that the Old Testament has no relevance in the New Covenant Church founded by Jesus Christ. In verse 14 Paul states: “… after the way (Christianity), which they (the Jews) call heresy so I worship the God of my fathers, believing ALL THINGS that are written in THE LAW and in THE (WRITINGS OF) THE PROPHETS.” Note it: The Apostle Paul, who received his gospel from Jesus Christ Himself by direct revelation and whom the Lord used to write much of the New Testament, worshiped and served God by believing and obeying the very Scriptures the Institutional Church rejects. Paul and the other apostles taught the church out of the Old Testament. The New Testament would not come into being until after they had left the scene.

In chapter 26 verses 17,18 we find Paul describing how God had sent him to the Gentiles to “… open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God so that they could receive forgiveness of their sins ….” The ultimate question is: What did Paul preach to the Gentiles that would bring them out of darkness and into God’s light so that they could be forgiven of their sins? The answer is found in Acts 24:14 noted above. Paul taught them The LAW and the TEACHINGS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT PROPHETS. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the apostles preached the Old Testament to the Gentiles.

In chapter 27,28 we find the story of Paul’s shipwreck, his being bitten by the deadly viper and suffering no ill effects, his healing the man on the island of Melita and his resulting ministry among them. By healing the man of Melita the Lord shows us that He performs miracles for heathen. This truth proves that receiving a miraculous healing or an answered prayer from the Lord does not mean that one is right with Him. See Revelation 3:14-17. In Acts 28:31 we find Paul “preaching the Kingdom of God and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ.” Now let us go back to verses 20-24 where Paul has called for the Jewish leaders of Rome to come to him in order to teach them God’s Truth. In verse 23 we find him “expounding and testifying about the Kingdom of God and the Lord Jesus Christ. His source–the “LAW OF MOSES AND THE TEACHINGS OF THE PROPHETS.” Some of the Jews believed while others did not. Instead of consulting the Old Testament Scriptures to find the Truth, they reasoned among themselves. Not being able to agree as to the Truth, they left, never to be heard of again. But Paul was undeterred as verse 31 attests. For the next two years he taught all who came to him. Verse 23 tells us what he taught–the LAW and the WRITINGS OF THE PROPHETS, the very Scriptures which the modern church rejects. L.J.
