The Book Of Acts (Ch. 19)

Paul has been led of the Lord to settle down for a while in Ephesus, a city known for its deadly treatment of anyone who did not adhere to its religious rules.

Verses eight through twelve: For the past three months Paul preached to the Jews who attended the Ephesus synagogue. His message–the Kingdom of God and the dead Jew Who made entrance into it possible–did not vary, which  caused many in his audience to rise up against him. The time eventually came for Paul to stop teaching in the synagogue. Leaving it he begin teaching at the school of a believer named Tyrannus. There he continued to teach God’s Word for two more years which enabled anyone in the area to hear God’s Truth. During this time many people were healed and many demons were cast out. In some cases deliverance came by applying pieces of cloth that Paul had prayed over to the bodies of the possessed. I have been used of God in that manner. In my case it brought about the miraculous healing of a sick child. Because cloth was not available I used a piece of paper. God’s power was in the cloths Paul used and the paper I used.

Verses thirteen through twenty: Here we find the sons of the local chief priest operating as exorcists. Not knowing Jesus, they called over the afflicted person “the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches.” This worked until they came upon a particularly powerful demon who whipped them and set them to flight naked. This invariably brings up the question: Who does the delivering, Jesus or Satan? If it is Jesus, the thinking goes, then He is using Satan’s people to cast out Satan’s devils. If it is Satan, why do his demons leave the afflicted person? Both questions are legitimate and deserve Scriptural answers.

What the Lord does not do He allows to be done in that He is omnipotent–all powerful. The Lord allows Satan to perform miracles through his “ministers of righteousness” (2 Cor. 11:15)–false prophets found in the Institutional Church. God also performs miracles through His own ministers. The key to answering the “who” question is found in a single statement: “You shall know them by their fruits”–obedience to God’s Word. No other so-called “proof” is legitimate–not the size and popularity of the ministry, the number of sermons preached or souls supposedly “saved” (see Hope and Salvation), not the number of years one has served in the ministry, etc. ONLY ONE PROOF IS SCRIPTURAL–OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S TRUTH. In Deuteronomy 13:1-4 God warns us about prophets who will perform miracles, then ask the people to follow him to serve other gods–not obey the Words of the Biblical God.

Relative to being one with the Lord, everything, regardless of its starting point, comes back to God’s Word–OUR ONLY SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HIM. The Counterfeit Church, being either ignorant of God’s Word or knowing it but not believing it, rejectgs God’s Words in favor of Satan’s words (Gal. 1:6-9), and in so doing, worships and serves Satan’s substitute god–“another Jesus” (2 Cor. 11:4). Jesus speaks of their ultimate end in Matthew 15:9. Note that His wrath comes on men for one reason–substituting the words of man (Satan) for His WORDS. Everything revolves around His Words, by which we will all be judged (Jn. 12:48). The whole of professing Christendom rejects this Truth of God, believing that church doctrine trumps the statement of Jesus in John 17:17 when addressing His Father: “Thy Word is Truth.” Notice that Jesus did mention church doctrine, stating that those who preach, teach, believe and obey it are WORSHIPING HIM IN VAIN.
