Change is always good, right? By listening to man one would think so. Periodically, items available to mankind are presented in “new and improved” forms. Improvement is normally the case when it comes to change in material items. I recall cars that had to be cranked by hand in order to start. I remember when there was no air conditioning, no t.v., no internet, no permanent press clothing, no central heating and air, etc. I divide my material life into two time periods: BAC and AAC–Before Air Conditioning and After Air Conditioning. I like my new and improved material life. But there is a realm of man’s existence in which change is deadly. In this realm any deviation from the old is called sin and results in eternal death if sin continues. This is the spiritual realm.
God intended for man to “replenish and subdue the earth,” meaning to use the earth’s natural resources for man’s benefit. God’s intent was for man to improve what he had been given. Generally speaking, man has done so. He has turned pig iron into steel, flowing water, wind and sun energy into electricity, the atom into power, oil into gasoline, etc. Man has subdued the earth, though not always in the right way or to the right extent. Why? Because man has forgotten the Biblical God who gave him the earth and what it produces. He has embraced the “god of this world” and listens to him concerning both the material and the spiritual realm. Which brings us to the focus of this series–moral change.
Change from the original in the spiritual realm is deadly. God is spirit, He does not change. He is perfect. His way is perfect. Perfection needs no alteration. Holiness and sin are spiritual and are not to be altered. There is an old idiom that states: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” God ain’t broke, neither is His way/Word/Law/gospel/will. Concerning Him, no reconstructive work is needed, ever. When road or building construction are going on those doing the work place signs warning the public: CAUTION–MEN AT WORK. Their work involves change, good change. However, when it comes to things of the spirit, men do not need to make changes to what God has established. But men do. And there are no CAUTION–MEN AT WORK signs to warn people. That’s the job of the Lord’s true messengers. Note the apostles epistles and Christ’s gospels. They repeatedly warn readers about deviating from God’s Word. The outcomes of the spiritual changes men have brought about fall into various categories such as Catholicism, Protestantism, Hinduism, Mohammadism, Shintoism and various other “isms” and sub-isms called denominations, sects, cults, orders, etc. At one time or another each of these abominations was presented as a “new and improved” version of God’s perfect Law generally known as the Holy Bible, which He conveniently summarized into Ten Commandments, wrote them in stone with His own finger then hid them so that man, using hammers and chisels, could not change them. Unable to physically change God’s Words, Satan-controlled man uses words to change God’s Truth. Man’s favorite target is commandment #4–the Sabbath commandment. By changing this commandment man supposedly legitimized sin by becoming iniquitous–a Lawbreaker. God says in 1 John 3:4 that breaking the Law is sin. He says in James 2:10 that breaking even one commandment makes one a sinner–a worker of iniquity whom Jesus vows to cast from Him on Judgment Day (Mat. 7:23). Recall that Jesus told the rich man that his ONE SIN would keep him out of paradise. Man, particularly religious man, has out-done himself in his efforts to change what God created perfectly–His Law. Man’s efforts to improve God’s spiritual Law has resulted in national sin. How did we get here?
When William Penn established what would later come to be known as the state of Pennsylvania, he outlawed “all such offenses against God as swearing, cursing, lying … incest, sodomy, rape, whoredom, fornication and other uncleanness …,” noting that such activities would “… provoke the indignation of God against a country.” COVID-19 is proof positive that Penn was right.
With the establishment of the colonies as a separate and independent entity that would become the United States of America, citizens having a passion for holiness would rise up when their fellow countrymen wandered away from God. As a result America experienced a series of religious revivals that came to be known as “Great Awakenings.” Preachers would call for days of prayer and fasting and the nation would respond. Repentance and conversion became popular considerations and topics of conversation. Education became important, particularly religious education. As a result, several colleges sprang up for the expressed purpose of training preachers. However, even while the young nation was experiencing a heart-felt zeal for things good and right, the seeds of spiritual weakness were being sown as such institutions as Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Columbia and Dartmouth failed to abide strictly to the teaching of God’s Word–the publicly-stated one and only purpose for which they were established. Instead, they chose to emphasize the new and improved “truths” their parent organizations had created out of God’s Word, this in spite of the fact that God plainly condemned those “truths” in His Word, the same Word that Jesus Christ called “Truth” in John 17:17. The Introduction to this website lists many of the Satanic “truths” those institutions and their parent churches brazenly and publicly substituted for God’s Truth. This in spite of Jesus warning in Matthew 5:7 about replacing His Words with man’s words.
As the New World drew ever-increasing numbers of people to its welcoming shores, an ever-increasing percentage of them proved to have no interest in the things of God. Over time the drive for self-satisfaction, financial and political power came to dominate the national mind-set. As the nation grew in power and prestige people lost their need for God and became more and more dependent on their own intellectual abilities. Though several “Great Awakenings” occurred over the years, what they awakened the people to involved fewer of God’s Biblical teachings and more of man’s “new and improved” church teachings. The new nation’s newness rubbed off on the people who developed a desire for newness in all areas of life, including their spiritual lives. Over time the new overshadowed the old. No one wanted to be considered “old fashioned.” New was en vogue; old was passe’, including all things spiritual.
Over time religious teachings that emphasized the Bible became the domain of those deemed to be spiritually deficient. References to the teachings of the Lord in His Word became the subjects of jokes by those wearing crosses and carrying Bibles. My biggest detractors are people occupying the upper echelons within the various churches. According to them I have “fallen from grace” and am in need of hearing the “truth” as preached by “God’s true ministers.” According to them, I can, upon repentance and joining the “real” church, receive salvation. My sin is not only of the heretic variety, it is deadly. I plead guilty as charged for believing and obeying the Bible owned and ignored by my accusers and their ilk. Having accepted Satan’s theory of human evolution, Americans by-in-large (including many churches) have also accepted his theory of spiritual evolution. My beloved nation has swallowed the bait Satan has held before her. The result is what I will call America’s New Morality. L.J.
